Final Guest Critique 3-29-12

Rebecca

    1) I can so totally see what you were talking about with the characters of your psyche with the less detailed creatures. With the ones that are detailed I can see a character and immediately start making a story for them.
    2) Think about how you want them presented.
    3) You can create a book for some of them with a story and then nothing for another. Let people guess why one has a past and the other doesn't
    4) I feel like they are out of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, they're animalistic with human qualities.

Russel

    1) You have an army now! I love the progression of the characters. You should make one with a lot of muscles.

(Russels favorite is the Bully ^_^)

Katherine McFarland

    1) You've got your own village now.
    2) I agree with not painting them and how you said that it would take away from the detail. However, I still think you should put a dot for the eyes to make them come alive.
    3) Some look evil and some look sweat and innocent, allow whatever world you see them in come alive and put them in it.
    4) Seeing them in a bigger group definitely makes them more village like and creative as well as child-like.
    5) Its great keep it up and think about the dots in the eyes.

Second Guest Critique

Mandy
    1) Make an environment for them, where do they live?
    2) Give them a story
    3) This work reminds me of Lisa Conn, you should check her out.

Angela Vargas
    1) Think about how you want to present them. Do you want to put them on a column so people have to walk around to view them or do you want to put them in a shelf so that people can view them.
    2) They are all unique and it would be a shame for people not to see them all because they got lazy and did not want to bend down to look at them.
    3) Think about insetting them in plaster, you can purchase Pearlite at Home Depo that will make it a sturdier frame as well as making it lighter.

Lewis

    1) I Would think about making a book about them. Have illustrations and stories for each of the characters.
    2) I like the fact that your putting yourself out there for the world to see. Though they are parts of your psyche and personality they still allow people to create their own stories and connections to each other.

Guest Critique 2-23-12

Russel
   1) This is awesome! They look like they belong in the movie Dark Crystal.
   2) I think you should draw them and see what happens.
   3) They have a very European (North Eastern) animation to them. I like the fact that it looks like they could kick your ass while others are very meek and mild.
   4) You have a very humanoid feel to them but also an animalistic quality.
   5) Think about why some have capes and canes while others don't.
   6) You package them with such care and love you should make them out of metal and bury them somewhere. How cool would that be for someone to find them 500 years from now?

And before he left he was very keen on me drawing them ^_^

Katherine McFarland
  1) It looks like a mini world create a narrative for them.
  2) Give them eyes, bring them to life.
  3) Things to think about:
            a) Dream imagery
            b) Give them a title/story
            c) Make a world for them
            d) who is the nice one/mean one. Who is a boy and who is a girl?

Jeremy
   1) it reminds me of the cartoon Gargoyle, have you seen it?
   2) They're so detailed, I love this little skull girl the best. She's sweet yet has a side to her that says don't mess with me.
   3) The alien one looks like she belongs in Pans Labyrinth.
   4) Painting them might make them look more toy-like and take away a quality about them.
   5) Have you thought about giving them a narrative? Control what the viewers will see, what you want them to see or how you want them to feel. Its completely up to you

Class Questions

1: Why clay and not something more permanent?
  • I like working in clay and the more I work with it the more I am becoming familiar with it so each new little creature is more sturdier then the next. Plus I dont really have the funds at the moment to make them out of metal or more permanent things. But then again are things really permanent?
2: How many are you planning on making?
  • I am not sure. As many as I can I guess. I'd like to make it to a hundred if I can, we'll see. The number isn't significant to me but can you imagine 100 little creatures they'd overrun the place ^_^
3: Are you planning on coloring them?
  • I dont think so. I have gotten mixed reviews and still continue to get mixed reviews. So I think I will keep them the white that they dry into. It'll force viewers to get closer to see whats going on.
4: What is the significance of some having hoods and others not having hoods?
  • Originally it was supposed to be the ones with hoods were sides of me that I don't show people. But the more that I did the more I realized that some looked better with hoods and some looked better without.
5: How are you able to keep making so many without getting bored or wanting to move on?
  • I have a very active imagination and it takes a lot for me to eventually get bored with something. Plus this is very meditative for me. It allows me to zone out and just create things for the sake of creating.
6: Do you have reference photos or are these strictly from your head?
  • All of my creatures are from my head. They may reference things that I have seen or felt but each one comes from my head.
7: Are you going to name them?
  • I have been naming them off of the first thing to pop into my head and for the most part it seemed right. Now whether or not I am going to put a plaque with their names and picture on it I have no decided yet.
8: Why are some faces textured and some are not?
  • Its the same thing with the hoods. I would just have the urge to make them either textured or some smooth, some in between

Digital Journal Exercise IV

"The attitude favored by the popular media depicts artists as crazed, unwashed, paint-flinging fanatics."

I love this excerpt. A good majority of the people that I have talked to have viewed artists in this light, minus the unwashed part. When mankind is faced with things that they don't understand they tend to label it crazy and like anything in life if you don't try it then you'll never understand it.

The articles view on attitudes is unique too:
"For artists and audience members alike, attitudes reveal little about issues, but a great deal about the person who possesses them."
I wouldn't consider this an attitude over taste but it can be seen as either or I guess. Whether people like your work or not and whether or not it matters to the artists or not is entirely up to the one who creates the work and the one who views it. We all have our own taste in things and what we like and what we don't like.
