Digital Journal Exercise 1

Q: What work have you made that seems the most like yours? Why?
A: The work that feels more like my own would be the Seven Deadly Sin paintings that I did in Painting I. As the paintings slowly came into existence they slowly got more and more detailed and better which I didn't realize until coming across this quote from the book:

"You make good work by (among other things) making lots of work that isn't very good,
and gradually weeding out the parts that aren't good, the parts that aren't yours."

And that's what I have noticed with this new project that I am doing, each (though still unique) have slightly more detail than the earlier sculptures.

Q: Who are artists that are making work that relates to you? Are there other influences? How are these other influences connected to your work?
  • A: Hayao Miyazaki, a Japanese manga artist and prominent film director and animator of many popular anime feature films, creates these amazing worlds filled with weird creatures with in depth stories about how humans are ruining the planet and other major problems.
  • Cai Guo-Qiang is another artist that influences me, though he works in gun powder (a medium that I have no desire to use ^_^) he also does instillation's that take up the whole gallery.
  •  They are connected to me in a way of process. Both love working out the kinks and letting things happen (especially Cai Guo-Qiang). I respect them and their works because pique a certain interest in me, what it is I don't know. It could be their process or just the sheer beauty of what comes from their works no matter how cooky or planed out.
Q: Discuss, in your own words, why you think this is so.
A: Art touches a certain spot in our souls. Whether its music, sculptures, paintings, writings, etc. It defines us as a culture. Without experiencing a certain spark while staring/listening to art I believe that we would all eventually become very dull and go insane. Being the curious creatures that we are we need to see or feel something deep within ourselves and when that doesn't happen we become but hollow shells. People can survive without electronics, in fact I believe that thats what is going to be our downfall. People can no longer function without their electronics which is a sad form of existence. Art is a form of expression once that is taken away how else will we express ourselves when we cant with words.

Q: Which of these ideas resonate most with you? Why? If they resonate, how do they differ?
A: Art is something you do out in the world resonates with me the most though the others have a sort of truth about them as well. I believe in connecting with nature and allowing the simple things to happen. I've never viewed art as going out and doing things for the sake of humanity because there are so many other things out there that claim the same thing, and yet nothing comes of it. So I like to see it as more of a self exploring aspect and producing whatever comes of it and like the old saying goes "we all have a twin out there" by creating art that is meaningful to us someone else may or may not experience it the same way we do but they will experience something nonetheless.

Q: What do you notice about yourself? What are your methods? Subject matter? The answers do not have to be limited to art topics.
A: I've noticed one major thing about myself and it has to do with confidence. I always start out a rock bottom and them slowly progress to believing in the things that I create thats just how I start off with everything; art, writing, socializing, etc. Now from an outsiders perspective I would seem like a rather confident person and maybe I am who knows? ^_^ A method that I do and is pretty much required (though I can function without it) is putting on music first. Ever since I was little and got my first tape recorder I played nothing but music; when I went outside to play or even when I was reading a book the music was always on. Music allows me to express myself where my mind doesn't allow, hence the project that I am working on now. Subject matter always leads towards something with life to it, whether its an animal, a creature or even a cloud (I love cloud gazing to see if I can get anything out of it, an emotion, an image, anything.)

Q: What do you care about? The answers do not have to be limited to art related topics.
A: Family. They always come first to me, everything else follows after because in the end the only thing that one will have is their family (hopefully). Not everyone has a happy life but it is what you make out of it as well because if life was handed to us on a silver platter then the fun and the meaning would be taken out of living.

Life is all about exploring and so is art. We may trip and fall but its all about getting up and continuing on this path and learning from the lessons.

Inspiration and Questions

Q&A
Q: What do you want your work to communicate?
A: I want my work to evoke emotions in people, whether its good, bad or indifferent.

Q: What do you want the experience to be?
A: Nostalgic. I want to viewer to make a connection with something even if they don't know what it is yet. Whether they feel connected to a certain piece or the whole body of work.

Inspirations:
My number one inspiration would have to be Johnny Cash. He was a versatile man with dreams and he went out and sought them. I may not of had a hard life like he did and I am still learning lessons about life but he was a very courageous man and went after the things he wanted. I guess in a way I want to be like that too ^_^

Hayao Miyazaki is another inspiration. I love his movies and his illustrations, everything he does has reason, a story and evokes feelings in his viewers anywhere from love to hate to things that make you feel sad or happy.
Cai Guo-Qiang is not necessarily an inspiration to me but I do enjoy his art work. He makes these designs with gun powder than lights it on fire to create his work. Everything is either an instillation or performance art, and its always pretty watching clips of his work.

Mythical World

After a long sought soul search I have realized that there was a side of me that wanted to be expressed that I have kept locked away. It would slowly leak out in projects that I have done therefore making everything have an aura about them that gave them life. As I continued on this little investigation, headphones in and music on, these little creatures started to form. Upon closer inspection I realized that each carried with it a certain characteristic of mine that I don't allow people to see. The insecurities, the pain, everything that I kept locked inside. Its funny how things surface when one allows that door to be opened. So with this portfolio I would like to make a series of life size hybrid creatures that reveal a certain part of myself.

Starting out everything will be clay creatures just so I can get a sense of what they will look like before I invest in more elaborate materials. Eventually I would like to make them out of wire and other materials to bring them to life, in a sense.
